Known throughout the industry as ?The World?s Greatest Entertainer?, Al Jolson was born in Lithuania and emigrated to America towards the end of the 19th century. After teaming up with his brother Harry he entertained the troops heading off to fight in the Spanish-American War. A short spell in vaudeville was followed by his elevation to stardom courtesy of his appearances at the Winter Garden Theater on Broadway in 1912. His performances soon became the stuff of legend - the audience had little time for whoever else might be on the bill; they only wanted to hear Jolson sing. In 1926 he sang three numbers for the film April Showers, but it was his appearance in The Jazz Singer, together with his immortal line ?You ain?t heard nothing yet? that ushered in the talkies and made Jolson?s reputation. That reputation was still intact in 1946 when Columbia released The Jolson Story, the success of which made Al Jolson an even bigger star than he already was. A sequel (one of the only times anybody has had a sequel to their own biography!) was equally well received. Soon after, Jolson ignored doctor?s advice and went to entertain the troops in Korea. He died of a heart attack shortly after his return.
